Spent the week camping in Maine. Took a series of photos of kids playing on a floating log. Sun low on the horizon. Comments welcome.

If you have the raw file, open up the shadows (Lightroom -> move the Shadows slider to the right). Unfortunately, in the file you have posted, those areas have been crushed to black and there is no data to work with.

That light angle is always going to give problems with harsh shadows, Daniel, unless you use some fill flash. But that often isn't an option and it can sometimes lead to other issues.

The image does look better in the Lightbox view but even then some slight tweaking of the shadows, as Manfred suggested, would be worth trying.

Nice composition though, so definitely worth a little bit of extra very careful editing.

This is a tough shot because of the large difference in brightness between the boy's torso and the sky.

Based on the JPEG, it looks like you crushed the shadows--no detail left--but had a little room before you would clipped the sky. It would have worked better to expose a little brighter to preserve more details in the shadows and then darken the sky in post. On the other hand, it's very hard to sort this sort of thing out why tying to move quickly enough to catch good candids.

A nice composition, in any case.

Thank you all for commenting. I wish it would have occurred to me to expose it a little brighter as suggested. Could have set up my camera to take several shots at different exposures. Will be better prepared next time. Included one more for the road below.

If you had adjusted your camera to get the correct exposure you possibly would have missed this moment in time. I am thankful you didnt. It is an image that just oozes energy.

Next time try putting the sun directly behind them and doing it as a silhouette.
