    Brockville Railway Tunnel

This tunnel ran for 527 m / 1,730 ft underneath the City of Brockville from when it was opened in the mid 1800s through to around 1970 when the tunnel closed. It was primarily used to transport lumber from the forests north of Ottawa, Canada to this city on the St Lawrence River for transport. It was also the first railway tunnel built in Canada.

It was cleaned up and fitted with LED lighting a couple of years ago.

Interesting tunnel Manfred. What is the finish to the floor it seems to be reflective, at first I thought it was water?

Manfred, your image brings out a wonderful texture in the hewn rock and you have chosen an area where the lighting is largely inconspicuous. The enlarged Lightbox image is well worth surveying to appreciate all that detail. The cool blue seems very appropriate.

Did they re-use the rail tracks to create the border of the walkway ?

Yes - this is a thin sheet of water collecting there from water dripping from the tunnel walls and ceiling.

Thanks David - this is one of those typical LED lit displays. If one waits lone enough and times things just right, all of the different banks of lights are the same colour for a few seconds. I found I liked the look of the blue best.

No Peter, the pathway and curb are all concrete.
