Peter, the first image does not work at all for me. The out of focus poppies in the foreground are a major distracting element.
I suspect you were trying to push the viewer's attention to the prayer book, but I never really get there. I suspect the image would have worked better with either a much deeper depth of field with the poppies and book in focus or the shot the way it is, but having removed the poppies.

Manfred, I would normally tend to agree with you that a focus point sandwiched between two OOF areas can be problematic. For this image I took about 30 shots at various apertures and focus points, and found this to be the most effective to me.

On the analytical base, i too feel image one is problematic; actually the idea of a sandwiched sharp and prominent part in between two oof parts is a wonderful idea if properly executed; here, i think, the main issue is that the floral ring in the front denies viewer a smooth entry into the content of the image by occupying too much of the entrance into the image; yet i think, what one really needs is within the frame; i tried just a crop out and i personally feel this solves the problem certain level; with the supposed permission of Peter i post it here; the image is fully yours; it is like, i say coming to your garden, "this portion of your garden i like pretty much, than as a whole"

A piece of nostalgia for me, my office was in Petworth from 1994 to 2000, in Golden Square.
