    I doubled checked the reading from the hand held meter with the spot attachment versus the camera's meter set to a spot reading. They both read 1/125 @ f16.

    I think that there are very few circumstances where you will get a perfectly exposed 'what the eye can see' images' in a landscape shot whichever metering mode you use. There is too much variation in light levels between sky and land.
    Personally I would use a centre weighted average mode for a subject but never wash out the sky.
    Anything can be corrected with RAW images

    Rob I have to agree with you somewhat myself I would use average, the "anything can be corrected with RAW images", is pushing it too far, I that is just wrong. let say you blown the sky by 2+ stops nothing in your RAW converted is going to save it. If the sky was that bright I would likely use a soft grad of 2 stop to get a good balance.

    The salient point is: the eye doesn't 'see it', rather the brain interprets it.
