For me, the mono version requires a crop to reduce the amount of dark sky, which means having a different size ratio. At the moment it seems a bit 'top heavy' with a large amount of dark sky overpowering the delicate plants.

I prefer the colour version. The plants are quite striking and I think the sky is is overpowering them a tad. How about reducing the amount of sky?

I find that your second try (#7) is just a bit to crunchy. The softness of the low clouds seems to have been lost from the original.
I feel that your crop of the sky moves you in the right direction, but suspect being even more aggressive there plus a bit of a dark gradient might be worth considering.
