Mt Everest - from a plane

Not that long ago, Sharon (lovelife65) posted a shot from an airplane.

That inspired me to go back to some older images (taken 6 years ago) where I found this shot I took from a plane while traveling from India to Bhutan. We were told that we should try to sit on the port (left) side of the plane as sometimes one could spot Mt Everest. Sure enough we got lucky and got a glimpse of that famous mountain.

I'm shooting north as we are flying over Nepal.

Excellent shot -considering that, at around 30-thousand feet, the window was definitely not open!

WOW!! Just beautiful. While we love hiking mountains, I could never imagine climbing one like this.
Thank you for posting, wonderful photograph. I'm a little jealous ;-)

    Thanks!

Just to make you a bit more jealous. Here is a shot of me with Mt Everest in the background.

Mt Everest - from a plane

This was taken in 2004 from the Chinese / Tibet side of the mountain at the Everest Base Camp. I may be smiling here, but was huffing and puffing - this is was at an altitude of 17,125 ft.

What an amazing photograph Manfred. I've done plenty of 10-11,000 foot hikes but never that high. Did you need to use oxygen? I'd love to climb Baker or Rainier, but we don't do hardly any hikes without our dogs, and I'd feel sad to leave them behind.

Very cool Manfred. I got a good view of it flying from Nepal to Istanbul. It’s an amazing view that you captured.

No we did not need oxygen, but we sure walked very slowly and had a headache for pretty well the full two weeks we spent in Tibet. This was our first experience in high altitude travel and since then we have been to the Altoplano in Peru and Bolivia and back to the Himalayas in Bhutan, Nepal and India (Ladakh).

Altitude sickness does go away over time, but unfortunately, our trip was over before our bodies completely acclimatized. We understand from a friend (and MD that has experience with altitude sickness having worked in the Mustang area of Nepal for 6 months) is that people die from it every year. The sad part is that had the returned to lower altitudes, chances are they might have recovered.

I've been to Mexico City a few times in the past, a mere 8,000 ft or so. Smoking made me dizzy.

Manfred, what was the height of the platform where you stand?

    5220 metres / 17,126 ft

So far as I know the highest altitude I've been at was the Changla Pass in Ladakh, India which was at 5391 m / 17,688 ft.
