    Tampere, Finland

I'm into a short B&W phase right now and am revisiting some images that I originally thought would work best in colour. This is a shot I took about 4 years ago in Tampere, Finland. The building and smoke stacks belong to the old Tampella factory, a former builder of locomotives, military equipment and paper making machines.

    Tampere, Finland

Why visit Tampere? It is the home of the Moomin museum, comic characters for children's books created by Tove Jansson in 1945. This is a place my youngest daughter had always wanted to visit, so that's how we ended up visiting that city.

I really like this. The black and white works so well.

Clear as a bell, all the tones and details to make a good monochrome landscape (or cityscape).

I like it a lot. It's a very interesting and well-balanced image. A pleasure to view.

I like it. The composition is attractive, and the control of tonality is excellent.

Yes works for me. The curves of the river bank and water coming over the weir contrast with the angular nature of the buildings and tall structures (chimneys ?).

    Chimneys they are.

Looking at the scene, the factory was originally built near the rapids on the river. A dam was likely built to harness the water power as the small building on the beside the dam looks like a powerhouse where the water turbines were located.

As the factory grew, steam boilers look like they were added, hence the stacks. The water turbines were likely replaced with steam turbines and the river water used to condense the stream that was exhausted by the turbines.

Great compost. I also enjoyed Engineering analysis of the scene.
