Butterfly against the Machine - Apologies to Pink Floyd!

A day, or two, ago, I hesitantly started on this composite. The basic B&W image (I only use photos that I have taken) was in a unique art gallery. I liked the shapes shown in the original. I recoloured using a gradient. Then added a flight path and a butterfly. Made the image square by adding the coloured base.

Definitely a unique image, but I'm not convinced it is working all that well.

First of all, that red base is so overwhelming bright, that it takes away from the rest of the image by attracting too much attention to itself.

Secondly, I find that the overall crop is quite tight and the whole shot seems constrained. A slightly wider view with a bit more negative space would likely be worth considering.

Thirdly, I find the flight path does not seem to fit at all. You have very stark shapes and the strange organic flight path does not really add anything to the overall composition. I suspect the image would be stronger without it.

Good idea. My two micro cents
    i) The bottom part of the right side body has fungus like appearance remaining to be removed
ii) The track of the butterfly could have been much lighter than so harsh track

The colour combination is very nice

    Hi Jim,

I agree with Manfred on the red 'base', if mine, I'd crop that off or fill with shelf colour to equalise the subject to edge on all four sides.

I think the butterfly track could work better if in three dimensions, i.e. showing a flight path that passed behind some image elements.

    HTH,
    Dave

    That's a very good idea
