    Junkyard Dog

I drive by this area when going into downtown Ashland... and often see a dog or two hanging on top of these piles. There's also a security camera sign in place (I'd say the dogs are the best security cameras LOL).
Want to get a better capture, but having to think of how to approach, and hope the dogs are out.

I would suggest that getting closer might not be in your best interest...

When I was a combat cameraman, I was willing to risk danger for the shot but, I am now a careful old man.

Getting bitten by a dog which is only doing its job would be no fun for you or the dog...

Zoom lenses can be a good way to get closer
In terms of the dog, I honestly don't think he's a guard dog. He barely paid me attention when I got out of my car to take a look (he's behind a barbed wire fence), despite the pup making some noise.
Anyhow, I respect no trespass, so had no desire to get closer, I just thought he was a cool looking pooch, seemingly content sitting on his grassy pile.

Looks better with the Lightbox view.

Maybe consider a slight crop from the left side and bottom?

I'm just partial to junkyard dogs and I like this one in particular. I like how he blends in, and his pose on the hill. I played with it and came up with this possibility.

Thanks, I'm not sure why I am unable to see this. May try a different browser.

Hi Sharon....Technical difficulty on my end. I did an extreme crop of the dog, lightened the ground, and replaced the sky. All pretty radical. But for me, the dog on the hill is the best part of the photo. Will try another way to post image.

I made a hidden page on my website and placed the image there. Hopefully, it displays. If the image was taken with a camera with high MP, the quality of the crop would have been better. I think junkyard dog looks pretty noble upon the hill.

Hi Daniel, thanks for the suggestions and edits. My fujifilm has 24 megapixels. I guess that isn't considered high any longer.
The edit: I like that you brought the pup more into prominence. It's a really cool looking dog. The lighting was crappy, so more difficult. The sky, I'm not sure... the sky was cloudy and wintery and that added to the mood in many ways. The crop... More focus on the pup is good, but removing the container took part of the scene out that was IMO only, important. I also liked the originals lighting on the ground.

Thanks for taking the time it looks better.

Sharon, let's think a little more about that - before you rush off to buy a 100MP Fuji ...

I'm guessing your sensor is APS-C so I estimate your original capture was about 6000x4000px ... which you posted at about 1600px wide. So down-sampled to a quarter size - assuming no cropping.

Instead of downsizing, In this particular case you could have cropped the original and then posted it here without loss of quality. As you probably know, CinC is none too kind to our posted images anyway.

So, please take the comment for what it's worth ... you don't need any more MP, IMHO.

Sharon, My Lumix GX85 is 16 MP so you are way ahead of the game with MP's and a terrific camera to boot. I wasn't thinking that I wasn't working with the original when I cropped and made that comment.

HAHAH. Ted, thanks. I don't think I do either, yes I have a crop sensor. The camera is perfectly wonderful for me... I just need to learn to use it a little better Heck, I am honestly LOVING the old Nikon F4 I have as well (yes, film). CinC is probably kinder than many places, but yes... the camera is never going to perform miracles, one has to make those on their own!!

She beats my Lumix G9 too, Daniel! Fortunately, 20MP is more than enough for my 2K monitor, seein' as I don't print ...

By way of encouragement but not trying to impress, here's what's possible detail-wise with less than 5MP (2640x1760px).

    Junkyard Dog

    ... Sigma SD15 with cheap 17-50mm set to 40mm and f/2.8, IIRC. GIMP helps a bit ...

I like the fuji. I don't need more to try to learn
I appreciate you taking the time to comment and edit. That's how we all learn.

Sure it's nice to have a quadrillion megapixels but, you can do quite well with significantly fewer mp... My first DSLR was the Canon 10D which had a whopping 6 mp.... It still produced some pretty decent imagery...

Just goes to show, that while the tools can assist, the true art comes from the human side.
