    Enhancing Image In Camera Raw

I have used Adobe Camera Raw for years - but have never used the enhance command.

Right Click on ACR image will result in a drop down menu... allowing you to select: "Enhance" which gives you:

Super Resolution - Doubles image size - Ideal for large displays and prints...

As the old saying goes "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!"

I am wondering what the down side of using the "Super Resolution" selection might be

I think the super resolution was introduced in an update only about a month ago.

I have yet to explore it. I guess it is a variation on up-sampling, but using new "AI" techniques.

A discussion on this new feature not that long ago, with some test results, can be seen here:

From what little I have found that describes what's under the hood, I think this is exactly right. Conventional up-sampling employes one or more mathematical equations. The new "enhance" method doesn't. Rather, it's the result of machine learning. They fed the computer a vast "training set" of images that allowed the computer to discern patterns that could then be baked into software.

I've only begun playing with it and haven't yet done any direct comparisons to other up-sampling methods. However, it does seem to be quite powerful, at least with some types of images.

PIXIMPERFECT has a video using this especially on low res images...

I am thinking that this might be especially helpful with some low quality images that are sent to me by the foster parents of our dog rescue group.

I am wondering if this might not be a way of gaining a larger image when you have maxed out on your focal length. In other words, using the Super Resolution AI before cropping an image...

This is a bit more in-depth explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izJHaC6sKPY

I was having a bit of a problem with some older images because I was trying to get the Super Resolution using the ACR Filter rather than the ACR Plug-In...

I am thinking that this might be beneficial in macro photography in order to effectively "get closer" to the subject because you could get a closer crop while still maintaining image quality...

Something else to play with during these COVID times...

re: "Super Resolution - Doubles image size":

Out of interest, is "image size" the pixel count or is it the length of one side?

The image is 4x the original; double the width and double the height in pixels. That is the only option available.

The Topaz Resize package gives more choices, but the results are not as good in my testing.
