    Photoshop will not open

Neither my Photoshop 2020 nor 2021 will open either from Bridge 2021 or from All Programs and selecting Photoshop 2021... I wonder what happened? I did not do anything to change the program. I hate when a program arbitrarily changes... Especially a program as important to me and one that I use as often as as my Photoshop

I restarted my computer and now Photoshop opens. The version that is opening is release 21.2.6 which I assume is Photoshop 2021.

It seems like it will start either from Adobe Bridge 2021 or from the Start Menu selecting Adobe Photoshop 2021.

I don't know what was wrong but, it took a far longer time than usual to restart the computer...

The last version of Photoshop that I downloaded 12 days ago was 22.3. The previous one was 21.2.6

My PS was also updated to 22.3 just a few days ago.

Richard, are you using Adobe Creative Cloud to update the Photoshop app ?

    Mine is also 22.3.0.

It will also start from the Creative Cloud app, but I almost never use that.

I find that this sort of thing happens from time to time with lots of software. It generally happens when mutliple programs have been opened and the OS hasn't been rebooted in a while. Despite the sophistication of the OS, conflicts arise between programs or drivers that the OS doesn't manage correctly. The long shut-down time is a sign of this sort of problem.

Recently, the applications that have given me the most problems have been Zoom and the driver and control software for my webcam. I sometimes reboot shortly before a Zoom meeting for this reason.

The file associations in Bridge and Windows can get messed up during updates. It restarting Photoshop does not work and restarting the computer does not work, make sure you update the preferences in both Bridge and Windows.

In Bridge this is found under <Edit> <Preferences> <File Type Associations>

one of the two places should do it. I don't use bridge much, but in my experience with other software, changing a file association within an application is just another way to change it in the OS. I used to do it in the OS but gradually changed because it's often more convenient to do it within a program.

Photoshop is not free. It’s subscription-based. The cheapest option gets you Photoshop, Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw, and Lightroom for about US $10 per month. There is a more expensive option that adds more cloud storage, I think, but I’ve never used their cloud storage, so I’m not certain about that.

Windows has a tendency to change file associations to favour its own apps. This is of course to make it easy.
Even worse Windows sometimes will no recodnise photoshop as a programme to open image files, and so doesn'tbshow it as an option.

One other thing to consider about Photoshop with older computers is this announcement.

Interoperability retirement with Internet Explorer browser prior to IE 11, and for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0/1.1

To ensure the continued security of our customers and products, Adobe is retiring interoperability with Internet Explorer browsers prior to IE 11 and for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0/1.1. These depreciations will provide additional security by ensuring all Adobe products and services only work with browsers that are receiving security patches from their vendors. Adobe uses encryption standards generally considered to provide strong privacy guarantees by the information security field.

On 14 July 2021, Windows 7 systems that do not have the following required updates installed will no longer be able to access Adobe products or services:

    Internet Explorer 11
    TLS 1.2 support

My older Internet use computer has had those updates (I think) and Photoshop still works on this system.

    Thanks Geoff,

As I stubbornly continue to use Win 7 Pro, I welcome the news that I may no longer be able to access the Elephant-in-the-Room's products or services.

Where on my HD do I check for these "required updates" and is it obvious what they are?

    Ta!

    Re: Photoshop will not open

IE 11 was introduced 8 years ago. Are we really concerned about compatibility with programs older than that ?

This thread has continued and has several pieces, so this morning I went back to Richard's original post, which I've quoted with emphasis added. It seems that I and some others missed the underlined part. A failure to open from the start menu is not a problem with file associations. File associations tell the OS what software to open when you try to open a data file, e.g., double-clicking a photo.

However, if you do have a problem with file associations, or if you just decide you want to change some (for example, I have changed some to open EditPad Lite as a text editor for some file types and Irfanview for many image file types), this is very simple to do in Windows. Click on the start menu and start to type "file associations" without the quotes. The best match that will pop up is to set default file types. Just click on that and page down to the file type you want to change, and select the program you want.

Cyber crime is huge. Continue to use outdated software at your peril.
I completely agree. if your OS is out of date and you're connected to the internet, you're at risk. All of my university's computers, including those assigned for home use, are set for automatic updates for this reason. Even with that, from time to time, the IT group will send out a note saying that they are pushing a particularly important update and that they will automatically force installation and a reboot at a specific time if you don't initiate the update before then. They just issued one of those for all Macs this week.

The most essential software to keep up to date is the OS, browsers, and whatever anti-virus and anti-malware software you have installed.
