Lovely image. Pow wows are always interesting events to photograph at, but not always easy to get a great shot.

The two areas that could use a bit of work on this image are the face, which is fairly dark and is shaded and the bright highlights that distract, on the left hand side, especially at top left corner.

    Re: Little Coquette

When I am out photographing people, I like to include a small hotshoe mounted flash with my kit.

When shooting Canon gear, my flash of choice was the tiny and low profile 270EX II. However, now that I am shooting with Sony gear, my flash of choice for walk-around shooting is the Godox/Flashpoint 350S which is a bit larger but, more capable... I don't know which flash unit I would use for Nikon but, the Godox/Flashpoint is produced for Nikon also...

These small flashes do not add significantly to the weight of my gear (the 350S weighs 200 grams without battery) but, will pump a bit of light onto the faces of my subjects and will also produce catchlights in the eyes of the subjects. Both the Canon and Godox/Flashpoint units are HSS capable...

I seldom shoot with direct flash but, normally will bounce into a Joe Demb Flash Diffuser/Reflector angled at about 45 degrees towards the subject. This is effective when I am shooting at close distances and is particularly beneficial when shooting: to displace harsh shadows in bright sun or when the subject is backlit or side lit and/or to pump some light into a face when the subject is dark complexioned.
