Excellent work on the ladybird Les. The bee is a honey bee but quality of the image is a bit below the super shots you have been posting recently .

    Good shots Les,

I've tried both subject types and they are not easy to capture.

    Cheers,
    Dave

If it helps James i always use a diffused flash now and it improves the image

The ladybird is a Harlequin Ladybird, the succinea form. They are rather variable.

The honey bee just needs a little bit more shadow/midtone brightness without increasing the whites/highlights. That image nicely shows the hairy eyes which separates it from the many species of Mining Bees.

Good captures. Excellent control of lighting. I find that even with diffused flash, I usually end up with annoying reflections on ladybugs.

The ladybug has a lack of sharpness, and I can't figure it out without more data on how you shot and how you edited. The honeybee seems substantially sharper. Is the ladybug a severe crop? Or did you use noise reduction?
