Photoshop not able to Save As Jpeg now

I have recently updated my Photoshop and find that the simple Save As command can't be used for 'normal' jpeg savings; although Jpeg 2000 is possible.

My usual photo saving format is PSD so that is still OK but I sometimes want to use jpeg for other work or images which I am sharing/donating for printing work with a 300 ppi setting. So much software still won't accept Jpeg 2000.

I have tried Export As, etc, but that seems to set an automatic resolution of 72 ppi. Acceptable for internet stuff but not where other options are required. Save for Web is an alternative for internet use but that puts dashes between all words so I then have to change them into spaces after uploading.

72 ppi might be acceptable for other uses if I make sure the pixel numbers are correct for later resizing but that is a lot of extra bother.

So far, I haven't done much experimentation with options. I just wondered what other people are doing.

Not doing well with technology lately. I was using Open Office for spreadsheets of my insect records. That software allowed me to save as Windows Excel xls format and send to various recording schemes which could then simply copy and paste into their data.

Another update problem has resulted. The new update has proved to be unstable and kept crashing when I tried to do a save of new or extra data additions. For example, daily input into a monthly list.

Then my anti virus thought Open Office was ransomware and blocked the programme. So I uninstalled Open Office and tried to get a new download. But that won't work because I get a stop with a message about needing verification that I am an appropriate user and I can't find a way around the problem.

If I was using Open Office spreadsheets for professional work I suppose I could pay over £100 for Excel but I don't want to do that for unpaid voluntary work.

I do have an earlier version of Open Office on this older internet use computer so I might try doing my spreadsheets on this machine instead.

Maybe it is because I am from a pre digital age; but I have had enough of latest improvements and want to return to simpler options.

Geoff - the "Save as a copy" selection is now what is used to save to a JPEG.

Adobe has gotten some heat for this from quite a number of long-time Photoshop users and they blame Apple for changing the API to force this approach. Trying to keep a consistent user interface means that Windows users get the same treatment as Apple. I still mess up on occasion, but there is "Save as a Copy" button on the "Save As" screen. And yes, one has to rename the file unless you want the word "copy" in the file name.

Re Photoshop: Yes, i also read that the problem arose because of a change in the Apple OS. I think Adobe is right to keep the PC and Mac interfaces as close to identical as possible. It would be a nightmare for teaching and studying if the two became different.

I was puzzled too until I read about the change, but it's a trivial change in operation and easy enough to get used to.

Re Open Office: one option would be to replace it with Libre Office, which is another fork of the same open source software. Our linux support people made that change in our virtual Linux computing environment a few years ago, so I made the same change on my PCs. the only drawback I've noticed so far is that Libre Office doesn't let you pick and choose which programs to install; by default, it installs the entire suite.

Save as a copy is working fine.

Eventually downloaded Libre Office. The download didn't start automatically but everything worked fine after a staring push. Seems to work OK and opens files created with Open Office using the same ods format.

I believe the file formats are extremely similar, if not identical. The differences seem to be on the margins, e.g., which foreign formats it can read and write. (Libre office can write as well as read docx file, not just doc. Not sure Open Office can write them.) For my limited uses, the two functioned essentially identically other than the file-save options when I switched.

Yes, the two systems seem to use the same ods format as a default saving format and that is operational in both programmes.

Not sure which Excel alternative format to use when saving to pass on to people using Excel.

With Open Office, I saved as Excel 97/2000/XP (xls) and everybody seemed to be able to open my files with no problems.

With Libre I get different options. Excel 2007 - 365 or Excel 97-2003. Perhaps the next time I have to share files I will have to save a copy in each option and see what other people report back to me.

Several other options but I don't think I need to worry about using them.

You can, by setting checkboxes in the Photoshop preference, get the previous "save as" options back. Full details in this YouTube video.

Re: Photoshop not able to Save As Jpeg now

Interesting. In the video, which shows him working on a Mac, checking the "enable legacy 'save as'" option automatically also checked the "do not append 'copy..." option. On my PC, the two are independent. (This may be related to Adobe's claim that they did this because of a new limitation in Mac OS.) I'm now of two minds. I think I'm going to enable the legacy save as function so that I have all of the file formats in one place and not need to use the 'save a copy' option, but I think I may leave the default addition of "copy" to the file name to avoid accidentally overwriting files.

Yes, this change caught me out at first, but I found it eventually.

Once you have used "Save as a copy" once in an editing session, it seems to persist.

Even if you forget and use the Save As option you can click on the bottom of that drop down page and Save as a Copy appears as an alternative.
