    Loss when renaming file?

Is there any loss of quality when I rename a file?

No, if you are just renaming, not renaming by saving under a new name.

If you want to keep the original and have a renamed copy, you might try making a file copy (in your OS, e.g. Windows), then rename the copy, which will have a name like "original-name(1).jpg". Do all this in Explorer, not a photo app.

    Cannot speak to Mac, sorry.

That said, I use (PS) "Bridge" to batch rename many shots.

You can safely rename files in photo apps too, as long as they are simply using the OS to rename them. You can rename them in lightroom.

Renaming in the OS changes file attributes but not the data in the file.

And following on from that is the saying "the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked"

I just had to look up "stupid" - apparently some instances aren't are as stupid as they appear .. we live and learn.
