I love the texture of old wood and often find myself shooting the specimens I find on the beach. But like you, I am never entirely sure of the result. I think the shapes in this are pretty wonderful, and the colour nice, though i think it might be even better in black and white. If you were willing, removing or the depression in the upper left might strengthen the composition. I will be interested to see what others have to say.
Alternatively, perhaps select that area and tone it down a bit to be equal to the other surrounds; then select all surroundings to tone them all down a bit more thereby bringing out the pine knot itself.
I've got lots of Cedar Tree burls around here but no pines and the various oak types are quite boring ...
