    Sailing towards Port Askaig

Taken from the deck of a ferry heading to Port Askaig, for a recent short break on the Isle of Islay.

As always your thoughts and comments welcome.

Fine, but I suspect you need to choose between the amount of sky or sea to produce a better balance with one of them becoming the dominant feature.

I think I would lose a bit of foreground water and go to 4 x 5 ratio? But there are several possible alternatives including reducing both and going square.

Reducing the sky does put more emphasis on the boat. But it is up to you.

I was going to agree with Geoff with everything he mentioned. Coming back to the image half an hour later I find myself liking it as it is.

I do not know why, and here is another example of liking something when there are not any obvious reasons. It is perhaps correct to surmise that there are concrete reasons for liking or disliking a photograph or a painting. I'll leave it to to the 'technocrats' to ponder. I say this in all seriousness. I have often wondered why a particular work of art moves me so much.

    Cheers Ole

    Perhaps a case of nit-picking?

I agree with Geoff. Ole - the sea is somewhat featureless ...

This may be age-related behaviour, but I vaguely recall a very nice series of Islay shots from Peter a few years ago - must be a favourite place (and no wonder).

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, I shall have a look a the different options of cropping.

Very cool image; removing a bit of foreground and a bit from right side can position the yacht better

Nice image. Great to see a traditional yacht under sail.

Like Nandakumar, I'd move the boat off centre a bit if it was my shot, but I like to see movement into rather than out of the frame so I'd be inclined to crop on the left, plus cropping some of the sea to preserve reasonable proportions.

I agree with Geoff in principle, but I wouldn't aim for a specific ratio. I'd aim for whatever aspect ratio looks best.

My problem with the current version is that it makes my eye wander up and down rather than drawing my eye to the subject. Sort of the opposite phenomenon from leading lines.
