Playing around with a few ideas

One project I am considering is where I show an image of one of my subjects holding a large photo I have taken of them. Doing it with a real print is both expensive and a bit troublesome because the print will often be a bit reflective and does not photograph well (tends to look a bit flat).

I wanted to try an approach that involves photo compositing. I had my subject hold a piece of foam core so that the hand position on the "print" looks "normal". I also wanted the background to look a bit dark to give the "print" a bit of "pop", so I used a technique sometimes called "focused flash". Here I underexposed the background by 1 - 2 ev and used off-camera flash to light my subject so that she was properly exposed.

Love the idea. A bit of hair crept in on 'large photo' right hand side. Love the pose.

Exactly. I suspect that I can probably translate this approach to the studio so that I can not only photocomposite the "print" but by shooting on a white background, I will also be able to composite in any background I want using a technique called Alpha Channel Masking.
