I had to read up about it. Is that a technique used by high end products having a predominant dark background?

Thank you - I already understand the theory, Daniel. I'm trying to fine tune the technique now, something that usually very specific to the setup and subject matter. For example, in the top image, I've got the rim of the glasses well lit and they stand out, but one in the bottom image is not. I also don't like the way that the glasses appear to "float" on the table top so I have to work in a bit of a shadow to act as an "anchor".
A most instructive thread. We used to sell some glassware on ebay and I always found it quite difficult. Once I got a shot vaguely similar to Manfred's but entirely by accident.
