    Sony at the Olympics...

It used to be easy to spot the brand of camera equipment that sports photographers were using...

White lenses were Canon L glass while black lenses were Nikon!

Now it is not so easy - there is another kid on the block: Sony...

Sony has released a couple of "professional grade" long primes aimed at pro sports photographers; especially in combination with the Sony A1 or A9ii cameras. Now, if Sony could finally release the baby A9 or Mini A1 as we were hoping for, Sony will have caught up with Canon cameras.

Tamron and Sigma have come out with some very nice and relatively reasonably priced long telephoto zoom lenses for Sony: 150-500mm and 150-600mm (which the buyer doesn't have to sell a kidney to purchase) but, the relatively slow apertures make these lenses not ideal for sports.

I'd love to see Tamron/Sigma introduce a relatively fast aperture long focal length prime lens like a 300mm or 400mm f/4; or even a longer f/2.8 but, the cost and size would be enormous) and there probably would not be a customer base large enough to justify producing lenses of that type,... When I was a Canon shooter, one of my favorite mid-priced lenses was the 300mm f/4L IS. It was a great combination with the Canon 7D Mark-2 APSC camera giving an equivalent 480mm f/4

    My favorite "poor man's sports combo" was a pair of 7D Mark-2 cameras wearing a 300mm f/4L IS and a 70-200mm f/4L IS...

Unfortunately the link is to a subscription site, so wasn't able to read about the Sony.

Sigma does or did an f/2.8 200-500mm:

When I first opened the site - I could read it. The second time I tried to open it I was not successful...

Basically, it said that while Canon and Nikon were sill the leading players, Sony had amassed about a third of the gear of the pro photogs shooting the Olympics...

All of the underwater video was done with Sony video cameras while Sony A1 cameras were set up for underwater stills.

As far as neat lenses go - the expected 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8 should be really nice for a full frame camera but neat for a crop sensor resulting in an equivalent 52.5-225mm f/2-2.8. I really liked that approximate focal range on the cheaper Sony 55-205mm lens but. the aperture was too small and the AF not fast or accurate, while the IQ was pretty bad...
