A few 'flies shot with a long lens

Here are some butterflies shot on a recent trip.

These are abundant in Argyll but I believe are less common in other parts of Scotland and rare elswhere. The orange blur in the background is a bee ...

These were shot with my birding gear - Nikon 30mmPF + 1.4TC, in this case mounted on the D810 set to DX mode, and with the aperture set to blur the background (which it manged to do with the nearer wing tip too in the first 2).

Just to show I had at least one other lens with me, this was taken with the ever-reliable 70-200. These are part of a group of 5 horses that were grazing around where we were staying.

I particularly like the peacock, the angle of the wings requires a bit more depth of field than the "flat" view, and you got it just right.

Just one question. Are you sure about the Small White? It looks like a Green-veined White to me.

I can see why you think that Geoff - the underside of the near wing looks typical of a Green-veined White but the upper wing has the dark tip and single black spot of a small white and on balance I went for the Small White.

Green-veined White summer brood usually has similar markings to a Small White. The greatest confusion between the two tends to occur when a Green-veined has reduced dark markings on the underside.

Thanks Geoff - I've update the keywords for this (and some others) in my library.
