Cambridge in Colour no longer has an easy and simple way of uploading photographs. I have ceased to be a particularly active participant as a result. I am aware I can post images via my now very little used Flickr account. However it removes the spontaneity of posting images that I enjoy with other sites. As a result of no direct posting method posting images to CnC does not fit into my workflow.

I have observed that the activity on this site has dwindled significantly and I am almost certain that there will be others who have drifted away or not joined due to the lack of direct image posting. It's a pity as the forum has often raised interesting issues to discuss.

It would be interesting to hear from previously active members on whether this is a major reason for their lack of current participation.

I never uploaded any images directly to CiC. I found it easiest to export them to Smugmug and link from there. I use Jeffrey Friedl's Lightroom plugins to export to both Smugmug and Flickr, so it's quick and easy. However, I vaguely recall something posted indicating that it is a little harder to link to Flickr here. It's extremely easy from Smugmug.

I keep a number of galleries on Smugmug that are publicly viewable but not publicly visible. This allows me to have galleries for kid photos that I can share, etc. One of these I've labeled "test shots". I export things I'm not sure about, as well as edits I want to discuss here, etc., in that gallery and link to there from CiC. I'm about to do that now. I have a first edit of a cleome image that I exported to that gallery and will post here for comments before I decide whether to re-edit and whether to move it to a publicly visible page.

I am finding that many internet sites have become considerably reduced in active membership recently. It is the same with nature related sites which I regularly use. So many of them which were once well subscribed have become little more than specialised clubs now.

The movement seems to be towards the 'social media' type of thing and people are going to where the crowds are to be found. Many of the sites which I use for wildlife identification/recording etc now have a link to Facebook etc (or faceache as I call it). Much of their site traffic now takes place on those alternatives.

There has always been a problem with site costs regarding direct uploading to the smaller operations when site storage space becomes too large. Many have followed the larger operators and resorted to direct advertising and gathering of members personal details for selling on to virtually anybody who will pay.

I find that I am unable to access many areas now without agreeing to having their tracking cookies on my computer; which I refuse to allow.

I use a pay to use site to host my photos (P base) and link from there because the way I see the internet is that you either pay for a product or you become a product.

I was hopping to open up a discussion about the situation as I think has had a negative impact on the activity. My comment seems to have been taken as a criticism of CnC that needs defending. Far from it - it was an observation that I felt warranted discussion.

Curiously enough, my other site that I go to daily (DPR) recently went the other way. While continuing to allow apparently limitless direct uploads it ceased accepting links to images on other sites. So here, I have to put stuff up on my site to post successfully but there, I have upload it to DPR from my HD!

Can't comment about the situation per se because long ago TinyPic banned me for life without explanation - so I've been posting URLs to my site for years.

Being not able to upload pictures directly to the forum has never been a problem for me.

I just don't have any new pics to upload. Even when I had some, I just thought they weren't worth getting critiqued.

Yes, activity has dwindled, but I doubt it is much to do with linking.

In my case, I really don't have much enthusiasm for photography at the moment. In fact, most of my photography is travel related, and for obvious reasons haven't done much of that recently (it's hard to remember that in January 2020 we were in Tenerife, and "covid" was unknown).

I agree that it seemed simpler to use TinyPic, even if it threw glitches occasionally. Now, I have a hidden page (for linking to) on my Adobe Portfolio site, upload to and link from there. No huge deal given how rarely I post

i have recently returned to photography and first port of call was CiC, but i am finding it impossible to upload pictures to the mini competions when and if a picture seems to go its a very small picture its really frustrating me with this any one else know how to put pictures on full size be much appreciated

Using CIC to upload has it's issues as you have found.
Most members use a photo hosting site such as FLICKR which will allow the uploading of 1000 images without charge, although you do have to put up with some advertising. From there it is easy to link an image to your post and you are able to select more appropriate image sizes.

It's pretty easy from flickr (including the free version). Click on the image you want to post and then on the Arrow at the bottom right of the image. You will see two boxes below the image, click on the one that has a drop down to allow you to select the size of the posted image. Choose what you feel is appropriate, then click on BBCode in the window above it and copy it.

Now go to the CIC home page and navigate to the forum where you want to post an image, for example "Photo Commentary and Competitions" and "People & Pets" then type a few descriptive words about your post. Now paste in what you copied from flickr and delete all the text before the first "[img" and after the second one making sure that you are left with text bounded by" [img" and "img]" (without the quotation marks!). Hit space bar and type away if you want to add anything or just hit return if not.

That's the flickr basics, but if you are interested, it's a lot easier if you have a SmugMug account. Dan pointed me to it and were it not that I'm heavily invested in flickr I would have changed. Let me know if you have any problems.

indeed, Smugmug makes it extremely easy. I can explain if you have or want to get a Smugmug account (not free). But in a nutshell, Smugmug has a photo sharing icon under the active photo. You click on that an choose "embed". The default is to embed a JPEG, which is what you want. You choose the size. It copies a link that you paste into this site using the CiC "insert image" icon. That's it. No need to edit the character string at all.
