I am not bothered by the small pink towel. It complements the large blue lettering on the wall and is balanced by the guy's fluorescent shoes on the left. These three points form a triangle which represents the solidity and security of homelife. Overall, this image is pretty good social commentary.
For this photo to be seen clearly, it would need to be part of a series of images, each showing a different person or family in the scene. Then you would know they don't live there, that the set represents an aspect of their environment and poverty.

I would crop for different purposes, but if I was to print I would leave it as is.

I can hear a typical club judge ranting on about this one: "too busy, other people's art, the pink/rose coloured thing at the right draws the eye away from the man" etc etc. Well rant on dear judge, I like this a lot; I like the way that there is something of interest almost everywhere you look, I like the mystery (what's going on here) and I like the way you handled the black and white clothing in a sea of colour.

When I saw the image - I thought that I would try a closer crop...

Well, I've never been a club judge, but perhaps I can rant well enough to be one.

I tend to agree with Richard about the crop. However, just for illustration, here's what I mean by toning down the vest. I didn't do it carefully, but just to illustrate:

    Bronx or Nothing

That's about a one-minute edit: select the object with quick select, open an hue-saturation adjustment, and pull the saturation down.

Ranting can be fun! Obviously my personal taste prefers no cropping of this, but I do like your colour edit.
