Printing a portion of an image to a specific size

My wife is doing Christmas ornaments for my daughter. She plans to do one for each one of my daughter's three dogs with various images of the dog's heads sized for each cutout in this ornament (she will of course paint and decorate the ornament).

For some reason, I cannot get my head around how to print portions of images so that the size of the dog's heads will fit behind the cutouts.
What do you figure would be the easiest way to size the images for printing.
I plan to print each image containing the head on 4x6" paper (of which I have an abundant stock) and cut these down to fit behind the cutouts...

Each of the shapes has a major dimension conveniently vertical by the looks of it. The pad might be horizontal, though.

Let's say the pad cut-out is 3 inches diameter. Now take a shot of the dog that goes there then frame the dog with a circle or ellipse selection in your review image. Then measure the major dimension of the selection in pixels in the review image **, say 900px (convenient for my advice). Now you know the target inches and the number of pixels to squeeze in there.

Ergo, set the print ppi to px/inches = for example 900/3 = a convenient 300 ppi, irrespective of how you crop the review image and irrespective of the paper dimensions. If you have a decent editor, you can set the ppi to anything you need and ignore what the driver tells you to use for your image size and your paper size.

** if you can't do that, time to download the GIMP ...

Measure cut-out selection 891px:


Desire a 2-1/4 inch cut-out, therefore set ppi to 891/2.25 equals 396 ppi.

ppi set to 396 (was 300):

Then get busy with scissors ...

Thanks for very much for all your help. After spending a couple of hours selecting, sizing and printing the images to fit in the four irregular size holes. my wife thanked me but said,
"I only wanted pictures to fit in the round holes"

It sounds like you could have saved yourself a lot of time (and pain) if you had only figured out what your wife actually wanted before you started to work on this.
