Is "cross point" relevant for mirrorless autofocus?

This article suggests that it is and that mirrorless cameras so far don't have cross-point sensors. However, this leaves me puzzled by what Canon meant in write that most of the dual pixel AF sensors in the RF work for both vertical and horizontal. I'm guessing that means "in both portrait and landscape orientation", not "for both vertical and horizontal lines".

But all of this is new to me.

My understanding is that it is. I should mention that Steve Perry says that he has on rare occasions had similar problems even with cross point focal systems. For either type, he suggests that you tilt the camera a bit if you're having problems acquiring focus. FWIW

LOL. My DSLR has one non-cross-point AF, leaving me to hunt around the scene to find something with horizontal contrast, such fun. With that camera, or any other for that matter, I usually focus manually to avoid irritation.
