Today is a National Holiday in New Zealand "Waitangi Day" which commemorates the signing of the Treaty in 1840, between the Crown (Queen Victoria) and the Maori Chiefs. Having noticed the holiday marked on my gardening calendar I thought I should blow the dust off my picture archive and post a selection of images from the day.
I have some additional images from the day on my website, for those of you interested you should be able to browse the website gallery by clicking on any of these images.
As always your thoughts and comments are welcome.
I hope you enjoy your Waitangi Day virtual tour
#1 A Maori canoe (Waka) going toward the Treaty ground, these canoes come in various sizes with this one being one of the larger versions. Some are described as war canoes with others just modes of transport.
#2 I'm not sure what the collective noun is for a group of Waka, I went with a "Gathering" for this image.
#3 In the image title I make reference to the schooner being built in 1985. To be more correct I should have said "Launched in 1985" as the building of it took place over a number of years with some hiccups along the way.
#4 One of the fast ferries that make regular crossing between Paihia and Russell, this and the previous image were taken from one of the slower ferries that ply the same route.
