Only using my lightroom through hard drive

I did something wrong in trying to save space on c drive, as a result my catalog file is on hard drive and I do not know how to get it back. Any one who can help.

Shouldn't be a problem. Can you say which release of which Lightroom version your are using, and which operating system. Which drive do you want it to be on?

There are a few files which make up the catalogue, and are usually in a folder called "Lightroom" created by LR on your c drive.

I would start by copying this folder from wherever you have moved it to (external hard drive ?), and placing it in C/users/"your name"/pictures.

Then open LR and select "open catalogue"

I was a bit puzzled because Ole seemed to be saying it is on his C: drive, which is where I would expect to find it, but he doesn't want it there.

I think he can use it just by double clicking on the Catalogue?

I have tried that but it will not paste to that location. Grrrrrr

This is confusing. The catalog usually should be on the C:\ drive. Can you write which specific location it's in? Here is what it looks like on my laptop:



If you just doiuble-click on the most recent *.lrcat file, Lightroom should open, and by default, it will use the catalog in that location the next time you open it.

If you want to move it to a different location, you will have to drag the entire Lightroom folder, not just that file.

You need to check the permissions on that folder that contains the catalogue files. Copy/paste is a simple operation.

I know the folder but I'm stumped if I can paste it. It looks very much I need to visit my computer tech. Grrrrrr!

It seems likely that you are simply trying to paste it in one of the locations where Windows won't let you paste. Permissions are generally an issue for where you are writing (pasting), not where you are reading (copying). If you are using Windows 10, you should navigate to:

C:\users\<your username>\

You can paste it anywhere under that.

On this computer, I have it under the Pictures directory:

C:\Users\dak266\Pictures\Lightroom

However, that's not necessary.

If I'm not mistaken, windows 10 will not let you paste directly under C:\.

What makes this a little confusing, if you use the "pictures" folder, is that the Windows file explorer will show the exact same directory under a second path, like this:



It's the same place, just a different label.
