The first impression I get of this image is that it feels cramped and needs more space on the left, right and top.

It's a gazebo. Pagodas are rare in the US.
I agree that it looks cramped, particularly at the top. I agree--I would clone or darken the area in the bottom left corner.

I could not do much about the top; however I added more space to the sides.

Was it impossible/impracticable to make an image which allowed the Viewer's Eye to enter through the open archway?

It is pretty amazing what can be done with content aware fill in Photoshop if it was really necessary to provide more space at the top. Adding about 50 pixels to the top of the canvas and then filling it proved to work really well when I tried it.
Of course ideally one would go back and shoot it again to get that space.
