The crop at the top and left hand side work, the bottom, not so much.

I agree with Manfred here. Your zoom was a bit too "super" !

I suspect you chose the crop at the bottom to leave out unwanted elements.

Yes, with the benefit of hindsight, I agree with the above.
The 150-600 is a new toy and I was more interested in using it to the limit than in maintaining a good composition. This is almost out of camera, just a small crop to the left taking it from 3/2 to 4/3. A lesson learned.

Yes, David, but this shot avoids the mouth. To my way of thinking, if you want to show more you need to go quite a bit smaller to show everything including its chin. Anywhere between the two is likely to have composition problems.

Nice shot of a majestic beast, David. The eye is the main subject, but, as others mentioned, the bottom crop option makes me want to see the lion's mouth. My eyes insist in looking at the whiskers ("moustaches") and my brain keeps wondering how the mouth would be at the moment of the capture. Once we cant go back to have the mouth, I suspect that maybe a crop just above the whiskers might drive more attention to the eye.

    My 2 cents...

    Cheers,
