    A nice face view.

    It is a male but without any widening of the tibia so it can't be a Platycheirus. The scutellum appears to be yellowish so I wonder about a Meliscaeva?

    In that case, Bill, it is a Eupeodes species.

    Being male and with individual hook shaped abdomen spots I would expect it to be Eupeodes luniger. Males of the other common species have larger more rounded spots which are joined together in the centre and resemble a pair of spectacles. But, Eupeodes also come in a few other rare species which can cause confusion.
