upload issue

I decided to upload some random mushroom pictures for a little C and C but something strange happens when i do. They appear drastically different in the browser after uploading then they do when viewed as files on my computer. Is Internet explorer changing the appearance of them?

In what way are they drastically different?
What size are the files you're viewing in your computer?
Is the difference because of any automatic re-sizing that's taking place when you upload?

No i changed the photos to jpgs that were smaller than the 160kb size limit and the largest edge was 700. The appear to be significantly less exposed and have reduced saturation. It shouldnt be caused by any automatic resizing and if it was i dont think those are the common issues from that.

Okay, that's the extent of my knowledge on the subject exhausted (sorry). We need to get some of the folks with knowledge about these issues to come in and read this and respond. Keep checking back regularly.

How do they look when you click on them and view them in another tab? (Right click, choose open in a new tab, then click on the new tab. If your cursor shows a + then click to see full size.)

Hi Paul,

I don't know the precise steps to fix, but I think I know what it is.

I strongly suspect this is the 'usual' profile issue; the image editor is set for a large color gamut profile like ProPhoto or AdobeRGB, but the browser, especially if Internet Explorer, assumes the normal sRGB which means they display desaturated, etc.

Colin will know the accurate way to check and fix,

I love a groovy computer mystery and did some Googling and skimmed a couple articles on embedded ICC profiles and color-managed vs unmanaged browsers. Perhaps this is your issue? Just a guess. I'll let you do your own research, since I have absolutely no knowledge on the subject except for the couple articles I skimmed which may or may not be accurate.

What needs to be done, is to export the image from the editing program in the sRGB gamut.
If Photoshop, I gather there are two ways, similarly named - and I can't remember which is the right one to use

It would help to know what the editing prog is Paul.

Also, why not post an image here so we can see what profile, if any, it has in it?

Sorry I'm late

Yep - I'd bet a chocolate fish you're saving them in Adobe RGB or Prophoto RGB. If you're using Photoshop then all you need to do is click on EDIT then CONVERT TO PROFILE (not assign profile) and then make sure that the destination profile is set to sRGB and you'll be "good to go".

If you're not using Photoshop then you'll need to figure out how to do the above for whatever package you're using I'm afraid.

If still no joy, post a shot here with Exif data intact, and I'll take a look at it for you.

Colin is one smart cookie. I was using lightroom and did not look in the options at the file settings (which were on prophoto RGB). click one box and its all fixed.
