    2024 Project 52 - Weekly photos by Geoff F - part 3

Once again, I will be attempting to post at least one photo per week throughout 2024.

Week 34 - The local Vintage Machinery Show
. I attended this annual event as part of Salcombe History Society but also managed to wander around with my camera. The first day was a waste of time due to thick fog. Even taking photos of the history society exhibit in the Crafts Tent was a struggle due to the poor light. I tried using the camera pop up flash but that tended to create light rebound problems.

The second day also started looking bleak but slowly cleared to sunshine, which produced a rather harsh light.

P base is one of the smaller photo hosting sites for people who are more serious about their photography. There is a small charge (about $20 per year) but it is a secure site with no advertising or the selling on of your data etc.

When I was initially looking for a hosting site I considered some of the bigger names but couldn't understand how most of them worked. P base is simple to use and quite adaptable. I have been with them for many years.

Week 35 - Snapes Point. Yesterday I spent a few hours recording wildlife at a point which juts out into the harbour. The day started with sunshine but by midday some high cloud was increasing.

I was hoping to find a Hornet Robberfly in Andrews Wood so I checked out the cattle dung and did have a quick glimpse of one but I couldn't get close enough for a photo. However this Kite-tailed Robberfly was more obliging.

Week 39 - Woodleigh Wood, beside the river. Another house named Private. On the right side of the style is an old railway track with an access path for maintenance workers on the left side. A rather dark scene with overhanging tree leaves so I had to use flash.

And a Stilt Bug from that day. Impossible to get everything in focus with those extra long legged beasts.

Week 40 - The Coast Path near Bolt Head, Salcombe. Besides looking for wildlife I also had a go at a few landscapes/farming scenes.

An interesting set of photos. The first one benefits from the contrast between entirely different visual elements: modern day farming, a rugged rocky coast line, then gently rolling fields in the distance.

I noted that a vertical rock formation appears in both the first and final photos. Did you take the final photo after walking across the newly ploughed field and then stand near the stone wall on the far side of the ploughed field?

That rocky outcrop is known as Sharp Tor or Sharpitor and is the next field to the combine photo. Past the stone wall.

I have other shots, still to be edited, which includes a stone wall in the foreground of the combine field. Part of the coast path runs along the coast side of those fields.

Week 41 - Store Boxes. It had been a sunny morning so around lunch time I decided to try some shots of fishing boats returning from sea and putting their catch into floating store boxes. But as soon as I arrived, so did the clouds. However I did what I could with occasional sunny spells.

Salcombe Harbour. I was particularly interested in those dark clouds.

    Re: 2024 Project 52 - Weekly photos by Geoff F - part 3

An interesting set of photos. In the first shot I was surprised at the percentage of sailboats that were two masted. Was there a special sailing event on for yawls and perhaps ketches?

You may have mentioned the answer to my question previously but if so I've forgotten. Do the fish boats place boxes of dead fish in the sun on top of the floating platform or is there a more sophisticated way in which the fish are preserved?

One of the fish boats appears to be a catamaran and has two "somethings" going into the water near the bow between the two hulls. I'm curious about what they are.

Another set full of interest Geoff. I agree with Bruce's uncertainty about the Catamaran - one of the views suggests it has 4 hulls! One technical question - did you do a WB check on all of these? The water colour is different in each one.

    Re: 2024 Project 52 - Weekly photos by Geoff F - part 3

Firstly, the two masted sailing boats are the traditional wooden Salcombe Yawls and there are quite a few which race every week during the spring to autumn period.

The store pots are for storage of crabs and lobsters. Some fishermen store up their catch and land once a week while a few merchants have sub divided boxes with each boat having its own section.

That catamaran has a type of planing fin, supported by those uprights, which helps to lift the boat out of the water at high speed. When the boat first arrived they had problems with that system breaking down but it appears to have been corrected. There is a lot less turbulence and spray from that boat than with many other catamaran designs.

The light was constantly changing with isolated clouds producing slight shadows and localised puffs of wind were creating various small wave effects. Also there is some reflection from different types of seabed.
