The question was predicated by what appears a softness, but only in some areas of the sample image.

For now please, I'd like to hear the possible improvements with what I had ( sunset, open space with no shade)

I think the Subject is moving her head. 1/200s was a tad too slow.

I don't like using Av Mode in that shooting scenario of dawn/dusk rapid EV changes for that reason i.e. one needs to be always watching the Tv. as it changes.

Or if using Av Mode in that lighting scenario I would have been at least at ISO 400 when using F/2.8.

A little Flash Fill camera right would effect better modelling.

You'd need to gel the Flash to suit the low CT of the sunlight, but if you chose to use flash as fill then you'd need to rethink the Tv; or go to HSS; or ensure that the Subject's head was still. I'd guess the Flash Sync Speed of a 60D is 1/200 or maybe 1/250.

Thanks a ton for all the info, really appreciate it.
I did shoot in raw, and my wife being a so called "coloured" she has more skin tone than for example me, but you are right it is a bit much!
Not wanting to find a excuse, I was actually out to photograph a lighthouse at sunset. There was virtually no shade but You are surely right, I could have positioned her/ myself better!
As said, thanks a mill for your suggestions and Ill try to remember them the next time, and will post the (hopefully) progress here

Yes flash is something I will remember the next time.
As you answered the other "iso" thread. It would again be a scenario for this "ISO auto" feature. I wanted to keep the aperture open, and could dial in a 1/750.

CAUTION!

I think that the 1DMkIV does NOT allow for Exposure Compensation with Auto ISO engaged and the Camera in M Mode???

In which case you would be at the mercy of the TTL Meter's decision to TOTALLY control the exposure. I would never do that in a shooting scenario of rapidly changing EV and or side lighting for Available Light Portraiture.

I am not 100% sure but I think only EOS 1 Series models at and after 1Dx allow for EC in Auto ISO and Camera in M Mode.

There was talk about a Firmware upgrade for the 5DMkIII but I am not sure if that happened.
