I shot this near the cabin. The light doesn't look right; the center has a bright area.

It looks like glare to me. You could try again when the sun is lower in the sky or on an overcast day.

The brightness range of that scene is beyond what can be captured in a single image. I would shoot two or three bracketed exposure shots then align them as layers and use masking, with other editing, to produce a composite image. Sometimes called HDR.
Alternatively, edit two or three copies from your original image for combination. Edited to suit midtones, highlights and shadows. Best done with original Raw shots. It takes a bit of time and skill but the end result makes that effort worthwhile.
