    Kettle & Mug

This is my latest attempt at still life photography.

I would appreciate comments on the composition and the lighting. Please ignore the softness of the image; I forgot to turn off the stabilization on the lens while using a tripod. If you look closely you will see at least 4 superimposed images as the lens hunted.

    Kettle & Mug

When I do the reshoot, I think that I will do the mug and the kettle separately and combine them in post. That should eliminate spurious reflections from the kettle on the mug and vice versa.

    Very interesting.

What kind of surface did you put them on? did you focus stack?

The problem with metal (and glass) is that doing them separately results in reflections that don't look real. Things that should be there end up missing.

No, I did not focus stack. If I remember well, I shot at f/14. What looks like out of focus at this size is actually at least four, maybe five, slightly overlapping photos. They are quite obvious at full size. I am not absolutely sure but I think that the stabilizer of the lens was hunting during the approximately 5 seconds exposure. I knew that you can't use the stabilizer when the camera is on a tripod but I forgot to turn it off.

The surface that I used is a recovered glass from a 18" x 24" frame. I painted one side with flat black paint. That way, the front surface of the glass reflects the light like a mirror. The flat black on the back absorbs all the light that comes through the glass so you don't get the double reflections that you would get using plain glass as a reflecting surface. It works quite well and for me it is very cheap because I almost always remove the glass from picture frames before using them so the glass is free.

Splendid shot - well worth repeating with the stabiliser turned off.

Useful tip regarding painting the back of the glass - like you I have loads of recovered glass from bought-in frames so no need to buy anything.
