    Dan - I think this image has potential, but needs a bit more finessing. The lighting is too even throughout, for my taste, so burning down the background to make the main subject stand out would be worth considering.

    I think that one of the reason we find old machinery interesting is that they are intricate. Manfred's burning of the background brought the subject out. A boost in contrast would probably help. I would also suggest considering going to B&W to get away from the mixed lighting as well as simplify the whole scene.

    Agreed about the boosting contrast, which I was doing about the same time you were posting this.

    B&W certainly gives the image a bit of a period look. I find that sepia, rather than B&W is also an option when shooting subjects from this time period.

    I personally still prefer the coloured version, as it provides better separation of some of the key pictorial elements.

    Thanks, Manfred and Andre. Much to think about. Maybe this isn't a discard after all. Mono does help deal with the excessive business of the original.

    Indeed it does. I thing the sepia version is just a wee bitty too not busy ...
