    Escape Project 52

    Week 1

    Black & White

    I consider myself a generalist when it comes to photography. I love capturing whatever draws my attention, especially when that little voice in my head whispers, "There's a picture here." Of course, it doesn’t always work out—more often than not, it doesn’t. But that’s part of the fun and the challenge, right?

    As for this year, I have no idea what it will bring. If I had to guess, it might look like a scene from a classic movie: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I’ll do my best to edit out the ugly before sharing it here. Looking forward to the journey and seeing where this weekly challenge takes me—and my camera.

    The B&W version is effective:

    1. It simplifies the scene (the orange mums and lights in the background do distract).;

    2. The light in the area where you shot the pieces gives strange skin tones. B&W fixes that issue.

    3. The vibrant colours in the clothing is lost by going B&W. I find India / Indian clothing are so colourful that they tend to lose something when shown in B&W.

    Thank you, Manfred, for your thoughtful critique—I agree! For me, the B/W version brings out an old movie star posse of the subject.

    I spent several days cutting and burning trees at my cabin. I could use a helping hand. No adjustments were made to the image other than cropping.

    Week 3

    I feed five wild kittens on my porch. At night, a raccoon usually comes by to finish whatever they leave behind. Yesterday, however, it surprised me by showing up in the middle of the day. It limped across the deck, inspected the food bowl, and ate some leftover cat food. He has a bad back leg that he can't use. Soomehow he has manged to live with it. I tossed him a few pieces of cantaloupe, which
    he enjoyed eating. Satisfied, I went inside to give it space, but when I looked out again, he was—dozing peacefully in one of my porch chairs.
    I couldn't help but smile at how at home it seemed. He felt safe enough to take a midday nap, and I was glad I captured a few of the moments.

    It sounds as though he has adopted you.

    I have to laugh because you might be right. Yesterday, the kittens were on the porch late in the afternoon—some were eating while others wandered across the deck. The raccoon was back in the chair, calmly sitting just a few feet away from the cats. I’ve seen them share the porch at night before. I wonder if the possum that visits now and then will decide to join the group.
