    Mini Competition #171

This is a mini competition and it is open to all CiC members. It has an 'open' theme - any subject at all.

Post your entry (B&W are allowed as well as colour) image in a new post below. Please change your post title to a name for your picture) (Click the "Go Advanced" button).

When we get 10 images a Mod will attach a voting poll, and any member may vote on it.

After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared.

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread and copy this text.

    Good luck.

Please do not request criticism and comment (C&C) on your images when entering this competition as it could be unfair on other entrant

Somehow, the poll will only let me vote for one image.

    Re: Mini Comp 171

I must not have checked the 'allow multiple voting' box. Sorry.

There are that many of these mini comps being turned over at the moment that it's difficult to keep up with them, especially now that the holiday season is over. Perhaps people would like to post some images into and take part in, the main photo commentary threads so that there could be more discussion, analysis and learning as opposed to just an ongoing quick turnaround of Mini Comps.

    Just a thought.

A very, very good thought! Thanks for doing all of this for us!

Adding a poll to a thread is not a Mod function. If you start a thread then you can add a poll. Why not have a few people responsible for starting the comps, and the same person who starts one then adds the poll. The 10th entry could even send them a PM to remind them. Some of the mini comps are started by non-Mods anyway.

Why not increase the entries to 12 or 15? And only one entry per member?

Unfortunately, the forum poll code can only do 10, it is fixed AFAIK.

One per member is an idea, although I don't think it'll make a huge difference, for example, there are no doubles above.

The other idea is useful though and could help spread the load.

    Re: Mini Comp 171

If the original concept was to have this more a discussion forum than an exhibition hall, might I suggest (at the expense of perhaps being hung up by my thumbs), that we have one mini a week, and one open and one themed major per month. we could suggest that members spread out their posts to the competitions to encourage more members to show their stuff.
We could also have a new Photo Commentary thread simply for posting photos for critique that might otherwise get lost in a specific thread.
I know we all want to be the comp winner and having been a bridesmaid once and tied once, I'd be thrilled as the next person to catch the brass ring, but in the same breath, I can see how, with the growing membership, these mini comps one after the other can and will become a nightmarish affair. It's just a thought and it does come after reading one of the Moderator's PM's to setting up competitions and polls which I have no problem with either/or.

    Hi Chris,

Give me your thumbs - now ....

This is actually exactly what we have - one finishes at the end of the month, and the other roughly mid-way through, I generally do the Themed and Colin the Open, Donald picks up when we're temporarily indisposed.

I'm not sure we need a new one, we have two already. The mods have discussed, and rejected, making it just one fairly recently.

Regarding limiting to one Mini Comp (of each sort) a week - I think that would leave a lot of people dis-satisfied and as soon as it opens it would fill up and be closed within minutes and many would miss their chance and be even more unhappy.

I think we'll give the sharing idea a go and see what happens.

However, I would like to thank you for raising the ideas, a lttle discussion usually helps and I hope I don't come across 'all negative'.

Cheers Chris - would you like your thumbs back now?

EDIT - Just saw Dave's post already in above, which covers much of what follows

Quote Originally Posted by ChrisC View Post

That was not the concept. I don't think I suggested it was. But the original concept didn't envisage members only occupying this part of the site. It was thought that people would take part in discussion and C & C in the main Photo Commentary fora and, particularly the more experienced, sometimes post images into the Mini Comps.

But, of course, everything evolves. The point being made is that, given it has evolved, it needs an effective process for managing it and ensuring it still meets the needs and wishes of members.

I'm not sure how this could work. I imagine a queue of people waiting with fingers hovering over mouse buttons waiting to get into the first 10 as soon as the one weekly mini comp was launched. As I said, it seems as if this is happening at the moment when I see people posting images within minutes of the mini comps being set up.

I agree that that is an excellent idea.

They're already there. There's been much discussion in the past and we have decided that the 'Nature and Architecture' and 'People and Pets' fora can accommodate all threads that might be created in which discussion or C & C is sought.

Which is why my stimulating this discussion is not aimed at restricting activity in Mini Comps, but of striving to find the most effective and efficient of organising and managing them.
