Does anyone know how this works. In my case nothing happens when I connect my camera to laptop thru HDMI cable to view photos. Any help would be great. Thanks.

The HDMI connection on your laptop is an output connection and that's why you're not able to see your camera at all. I believe HDMI connection on your 50D will only work on your big screen with HDMI inputs.
