    Sunset in Rio

    Hello,

Today I went out to try some pictures in the so called "magic hour". All the pictures were taken in the Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, but don't ask any carioca "Where is the Park Brigedeiro...?" simply say "Where is the Aterro do Flamengo", we never call it for its oficial name.

Please, give me your opinion about exposure, composition and so on. Pictures were shot with my Canon Sx20is, hand held, no post-production (I don't know how to do it at the moment, too many things to learn at once =D).

#1 - This is the classic picture of "Believe me, in my eyes it was much better. Although it is nice" The hill is the biggest one of Pão de açucar (Sugar loaf)
    ISO 400 F/8 1/80s
    Sunset in Rio

(there's another similar in my album)

    #2
    I guess that it's too noisy, probably due to ISO 800 (F/5 1/30 s)
    Sunset in Rio

    #3 ISO 200 f/5 1/100s
    Sunset in Rio

    Thank you all =)

The sun sets around 6:00PM, so did you start shooting roughly around 6:10PM? The golden hour is actually a shorter period of time and usually occurs when the sun has crested the horizon. You'll know when it occurs by looking behind you at other objects, they will take on an orange hue.

    Hi,

Well, we are in dayling saving time. I took the pictures around 19:00. The "magic hour" actually would be something harder to predict since it depends on other conditions, right?

    How about the pictures? =D

#1 Not sure what your center of interest is here. If it is the railcar, I would either focus more on that object and eliminate most of the foreground material. I like the other version in your album #3 which includes more detail and the objects are positioned better within the frame.

#2. the composition is better here but the area in the foreground, directly below the sailboat was cropped to severely. The lights from the shore needs more contrast.

#3 My favorite, although some would say that the horizon is too centered within the frame, I think the lines formed by the clouds and the diagonal in the foreground help move the eye around the frame.

John, thank you once more for the comments on pictures and for the link for the thread.

#1 - I see, I think that I got what you mean. I'll try to shot this again soon. I'm not sure if you meant picture 3 or 4 in the album. I think that the order is changed since you've seen it. I'll post both below. But I guess that it's four. The one with the kyte I think that was a good idea but surely I didn't have the enough skill to do it good. The sky is nice, but the rest too dark .

#2 When I shot was in doubt of what would be better. I was afraid that it would be too much space with water (in front of the boat and then between the boat and the platform). (I thought that you would complain about the noise)

#3 Ah, right. I'll bear that in mind, not to make a midline with the horizon

#4 - Sugar loaf and the kyte
    Sunset in Rio

    #5 Sugar loaf's peak
    Sunset in Rio

    Jonathan,

Yes, I was referring to #3 in the album which you have displayed in this thread, the composition looks more interesting with the kite and city below the mountain. Brought back memories of my trip from a few years back.
