Well I cannot see a difference except the price.

One of the reviews for the cheaper version says it lacks the internal flocking of the more expensive Canon version.

A rub with a bit of fine wire wool should do the trick.

One is made by Canon, the other by Opteka. They also come form different Amazon resellers (or whatever they call them).

I use a third party (Chinese knock-off) lens hood for my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens and have had no problems. The lack of flocking doesn't seem to make a great difference in flare protection and the filter fits just as well as the Canon OEM model.

Along the same lines, I have switched from the Canon OEM lens hood to Chinese knock-off versions for all my Canon lenses. The Canon lens hoods are "side pinch" and the Chinese versions are "center pinch". IMO, center pinch versions are a LOT EASIER to put on and take off when the lens is wearing its hood and I always have a hood on my lens - indoors or out.
