I bounced it off a white surfuce on the right; hey, the shadows are intentional

See how better it is ?
Let's move on and be careful about that too distracting background, those hanging lights and the other person !
Now we need to place the person near a white wall at our left just to see what happens.

Using the verb to shoot instead of the verb to photograph is faster to write and I suppose it is a more American way to say the same. Am I right ?

The picture is all "normal" I mean, to artificial colors whatsoever. (colour in English, right ?)

I wish I could speak better English...

    No one was hurt.

Yes, I was being silly (you know that), taking the verb to shoot (i.e. with a gun) the fencer, because you'd be stabbed

But like I say, I think you knew that!

I wish, I wish .... I could express myself better

Almost on my knees... Focus, compose, wait a bit (2 seconds?), suddenly the young girl looked at me. That's what I was waiting for. And that was the moment ! Click.

When I posted the first image I realized that the composition was not as good as I would like it to be. I repeated the process. It is better now.

    Thoughts to myself
This focus and compose business I did is not very correct. I do know that. I do am aware of the fact.
Unless, the aperture is rather small and the DOF is deep. However we must be careful if we are working in full frame, more sensible to the DOF.
But sometimes the dam center point doesn't focus properly... because the light is dim and there is no contrast on the target...
Then, the solution would/could be focus by hand. Yes, but in occasions like this you must act quickly and you don't have time to do so.
And the standard focus screen is not a must if you don't see very very well.

The photos above were shot with the 20D + 1,4 multiplier and the 70-200 f/2,8 L USM in Morocco.
People don't like to be shot there...
I had to go and ask them... What could I do ?

No, to me it doesn't seems like rubbish...
It is an image with a different character if I may say so ...
However I wonder if this is a portrait... Well yes, it is a portrait if you consider that object/target/subject of the image is a person.
In fact, I see no reason why a portrait can't be like this one ...
But on the other hand, an image of two hands for example is it a portrait ? Huuummm... don't think so. And however, the target is a person.
May be a portrait is something involving a face or a body of someone or some living being.
Oh here we go: The body of a bee or insect is it a portrait ? No. It is not.

I just begun this thread and I have been commenting on all the images in spite of my clumsy English but is there somebody else around that could speculate a little about this ?

May be if I Google about portrait definition ... But not now. I am in process of ranging my stuff and I passed here and decided to drop a line.
According to the Wikipedia a portrait is - and I quote - "A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer."

But a portrait in literature can be - and I quote again using the same source - "In literature the term portrait refers to a written description or analysis of a person or thing. A written portrait often gives deep insight, and offers an analysis that goes far beyond the superficial. For example, American author Patricia Cornwell wrote a best-selling book titled Portrait of a Killer about the personality, background, and possible motivations of Jack the Ripper, as well as the media coverage of his murders, and the subsequent police investigation of his crimes."

    Let's substitute/replace written by photographic:
A photographic portrait often gives deep insight, and offers an analysis that goes far beyond the superficial.
Look at my first image, the one I begun with this thread. It goes deep inside the person...

In this case your image is portrait all right !

Just some quick thoughts of mines.

Thank you for posting. Keep them coming ...

I did wonder if it was important that the face was missing but come to the conclusion it wasn't since the hands in this case express more than the face (there is particular traditional meaning of the hand gesture) and my (probably wrong) thinking is if it was of a person it was a portrait.

However technically I reckon from those definitions it doesn't fit as a portrait, sorry . There is always one hehehehe (but why is that "one" always me )
