Very nice Anton. Both the child and the photo. Couldn't you please add a little vignetting ?
I think it would enhance her face and fade a little the colored background...
    Just a suggestion as always.
EXIF ? Bounced flash for sure !
A little more light in the eyes please !

Re: Square cropped portraits (SCPs) - please post them here

    Hi Antonio,

    Thanks!

I did actually try a little vignette but didn't like the result... (Just using Lightroom 1.)

EXIF is as always embedded in the image so you should be able to see it for yourself...

And yes, as you guessed bounced flash (580 EX II with white card pulled out).

Anyway, full shot details: Canon 40D, Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM at 55mm, Canon 580 EX II, Camera in Manual with settings 1/250s shutter speed, f/2.8 aperture, ISO 400, flash using ETTL II bounced straight up with white card pulled out in our kitchen which has a white ceiling and yellow walls so I always have to adjust the white balance as there is a yellow colour cast otherwise from the light inadvertently bouncing off the walls..

btw. Feel free to edit my images and post the result if you think you can make them better. I am always happy to see what other people would do in PP. I am more of a "faithful" look sort of a person so I don't tend to do much post processing at all. The images I have posted only are cropped, white balance adjusted, and a bit of contrast, etc adjusted. I very seldom do any more than that...

    Best regards,

    Anton

No Anton. The EXIF is not available but never mind.
I will work on your image. You did a very good job, working with f/2,8
We can see you in your avatar shooting the way you described.

Would you please repeat the same photo but placing a white cloth under her ?
I mean, on the table if she is seated on one
Something to fill the shadows and simply placed, without the help of any assistant. Or, if the mother wants to help, try with some white sheets (from your bed, ) to make reflections somehow.

I am waiting for your raw file.

Regards and thank you for posting and commenting.

Peter, please check your focus, your eyes or both.
The photo is out of focus but the light is OK.
Can we see another one correctly focused if you please ?
Are you using the central point ?
Or are you just using a point and shoot which are in fact, also pretty good cameras ?

You know, the catch light, the light it self is superb. Come on Peter give us another one far better than this. The potential is here, let's move to a better photography.

    I'm waiting

As I suspected she has blue eyes...
I think I can do better with the original file. Too magenta may be ?
I should have cloned the upper right corner ... I saw it now.

Look at her eyes. If you have some kind of reflection underneath her ... at some 45 degrees angle with her face ... perhaps an A3 will do the job
Is underneath the right word ? I am doubting...

For what it is worth Antonio, I can see the EXIF on both Anton's and Peter's shots (using EXIF viewer plug-in on Firefox).

Peter's pic was taken with a Canon Powershot G9 (1/60 @ f3.5, ISO200), I agree, sadly it is quite soft.
In defence, if I am any judge of child behaviour, I'd guess this was a case of grand-daughter rushing towards camera and out-running the auto-focus! No doubt the subsequent shots didn't have the appealing expression. That's life, eh?

    Regards,

    Dave hello !
I don't see any EXIF except in my own pics. I probably don't have that plug-in on Firefox. And I can't see it either in Safari.

What you say is most probably right. The G9 camera only shoots if the subject is in focus. Then: 1. the girl was focused 2. She moved 3. The camera was triggered resulting in a soft picture.

I think I have been a little rude saying Peter to go and check the focus camera and/or his eyes. I do apologize. I am sorry and I didn't mean to be offensive at all. Peter, I am sorry. I have a dam of a character !

I hope Peter will post a nice image of his grand-daughter with the G9 which is, in fact, a great camera.

.. and oddly; I can't see the EXIF in your pics

Oh well, just as well you usually do the smugmug EXIF link which gets around the problem - a nice idea - thanks.

    Hi Antonio,

No offence taken. This was a quick and dirty snap in the chaos of a birthday party, also the original does look sharper so I'll do some work on it and re-post when I've got more time. Posted this as I really liked the composition and her expression.

    Peter

The boy is in focus, the background is blurred, the choice of lens is correct, the colors are nice...

In my monitor the faces are a tad, very little tad if I may say so, too white. But I think this is a monitor problem.

What a progress since the beginning...

    Congratulations. Don't stop now.

Are you using a Mac? If so you can easily install one of the plug ins to allow you to see exif data in your Firefox (just google for "firefox plugin exif" and you should find at least one!).

Also if using Safari (which is what I use), then what I do is drag an image I want to see the exif data to my desktop, then double click the image on my desktop which causes Preview to open the image. Then in Preview go to "Tools" -> "Inspector", click on the "speech bubble with an exclamation mark in it", then click on "Exif" and it shows you the full exif data embedded in the image.

    Best regards,

    Anton

No need for bedsheets. I have two 43" (110cm) circular 5-in-1 reflectors plus stands and reflector holder arms...

Interesting idea to use a reflector when bouncing toward the ceiling. I will have to try it some time. But it will have to wait as all my photography gear is in the loft - we had a massive clearout as we are selling our house so it has to look tidy!
