I've spent a couple of days in the past week aboard this fishing boat, getting her computers sorted out (in fact I was still having dinner onboard about 1/2 hour before she sailed) (often they threaten to sail with me still onboard, but they get frightened off when I tell them they're most welcome to take me with them for several weeks, but only on the condition that they pay me my usual hourly rate!).

She set sail at 9pm tonight (pretty much twilight), so I thought I might get the chance to capture a couple of moody shots ...

... Did I succeed? I'll let you be the judge (and jury!).

1 is ok/nice but number 2 I like very much.. the long focal length works great, nice lighting, great colour and great backdrop... I like the battered panels down the side of the ship... really gives it character.. the photo has some feel to it...

this is a fishing boat I believe? Helicopter on the front and... whats that on the back?

The little boat on the back is called a "Skiff" - it's basically an "onboard support vessel" when they're fishing (it's a tuna boat).

That's packed with mood an atmosphere - just my sort of thing. What I would describe (although it migth be wrong) as the muted tones, along with the composition (the boat heading away from us) just load it full of emotion. This is the sort of stuff that lights my candle!

Hi Colin,

#2 does it for me also. It also gives the impression it is leaving into a dark foreboding night with all the mystery that surrounds it.

#1, while still a good shot, could be any ship coming into port.

I'm with everyone else on this. Number 1 has lovely colours but says 'travel brochure' to me. Number 2 is really moody, great sense of foreboding, off on an adventure, what's going to happen? (We need a thumbs up icon here)
