Looks like I'm gonna have to spend a little bit more time looking before taking and a lot more time learning an editing prog.
Tuesday is my real online name.

Nothing is too harsh. I thought the composition of the one with the trees needed work, but I loved the colors. I also understand how yoou said that sunsets are a hard shot because everyone does them. Thanks for the help!

These were taken at Waimea Bay, usually known for it's big waves. The big waves come in the winter.

A shot of the forest southwest of the Jezreel Valley, Israel taken from Mt. Carmel. The wind was out of the west that day and it is extremely dusty.

    ..New... at everything..

    Hi everybody,
I'm new at CiC, and I'm trying to don't make mistakes...!
I'm new also to photography, I bought a canon 50D two months ago, but the first picture I'm going to post has been shooted with my previous camera: a Lumix fz18, with that camera I practiced my firts steps on photography.
What do you think about it? a shot of the panorama from church "Notre Dame de la Serra" near Calvě (village on the extreme left in the photo) Corse isl., France
(P.S. sorry for my poor english)

    Hi Nicola,

Your English is fine, so no worries there, and you successfully got an image up, well done.

    That's a nice view, but I wasn't sure you had made the best of it, so I took a liberty and applied 5 minutes of PP to hopefully improve it - I hope you don't mind;

Like your original, best viewed larger in Lytebox by clicking the image.

I see you have CS4, so these things I did in Elements should make sense ...

As most of the shot is in shade, I white balanced off one of the white hut things bottom right.
I increased the grey midpoint in Levels to raise the brightness of the foreground
I applied some Local Contrast Enhancement (LCE) with USM at 20% and (from memory) 60px radius, 0 threshold
    I did a USM sharpen; 100%, 0.3 px radius, 3 threshold
Increased the saturation by 15 in HSL

I was fairly conservative, not wanting to overdo it.

If you have clicked my image above and are viewing in Lytebox, you can compare to original by using Prev/Next links on left or right side of image.

Arguably, as the horizon is still midway, it might benefit from cropping a little sky off the top edge.

Welcome to the CiC forums from ...

    Many thanks Dave!
    it's a great teaching!
now I try to put in practice your procedure, i like your version of my image, and I will try to go trough it, with some personal adjustment in order to improve my photoshop capability... even if I will never print an image too manipulated by software!
In this case I would like amplify the sunset light.

many thanks once again, see you soon

That's a cracker! I am not in this thread as often as I should be and just wandered in this evening ... and was stopped in my tracks by this. That's a spectacularly presented sunrise. The light on the stone support and then out along the railing is beautiful. And that row of lampposts ...!

You need to get this into the mini or monthly (once Colin starts it up) competition.

    ANother bridge

Funny, I was just about to post this picture when Donald's remark appeared regarding Edwin's bridge picture...mine is another bridge in another part of the world, shot on a different morning and probably with a different camera...it's fun to see the commonality we have in this "birds of a feather.." group.

    mistral on january

    Hi everybody,
another image of mine.. sunset at Quercianella, Livorno italy. What do you think about it? Is the horizon so disturbing? must I cut a slice of sky or sea? or the wave and rocks are enough "heavy" in order to respect the rule of third?
    many thanks!
    have a nice day

Thanks for your encouragement Donald, it's always good to hear from a perfectionist such as yourself. It's pouring cats & dogs here in "The Sunshine State" so I can't get out to take Photo's. I hope my cameras or I don't go rusty in the meantime. Yes, I shall post my pic in the comp, as suggested by you, when Col starts it up again.
    Cheers........Ed.

    Nicola

This is a very good image and, in my opinion is a better quality picture than your earlier post of the panorama from church "Notre Dame de la Serra".

I would suggest making the picture at a 1:1 (square) ratio. The reason for this is that I think the left hand side of the picture does not contribute to the overall image. The points of interest are all in teh rigth hand side of the picture. If you crop it as I have suggested here, you focus more attention on those areas. This is something for you to consider.

The highlights on the rocks make them very attractive. Once your skills have developed and you are able to apply dodge and burn techniques you could use these to show more detail in those rocks. At the moment, they could be considered to be too dark. However, this is a matter of choice for the artist, and some people will not agree with this opinion.

I finally got out late this afternoon when I saw a break in the clouds. I only managed to take several images before the clouds started to form & the rain started to tumble down again. I hope you like this one, which was taken in the Somerset region.

Your first picture Shane is - for me -rather flat in terms of composition in spite of the curve of the land lining to the right. I would like to see some herbs closer to us... like coming right into the lens
I like best the second one and I keep having the feeling that the young lady is ... a model. I mean, she was not there nor has been even if the light is correct. In this picture the composition is better but I am not sure about the way you cropped it.

I am new at this, so if I have done something out of order, then please delete. Thanks, Roger
Your image Roger suffers, like Shane's, from depth. Nothing in the foreground, nothing showing us how dusty or windy the place is. Perhaps some adjustments were of some use in the bushes...
Care to try again please from a lower angle and with some dusty land as foreground ?
    Thank you for posting here
