    Re: Sunrise over lake somerset.

Hi all, still very much getting to grips with my camera, and the subsequent processing. There are some great landscapes in this thread, and so I thought that I would have a go on a recent trip to Dorset. I used a graduated filter on the sky in Lightroom but am not sure if it looks quite right? Any c&c greatly appreciated.

Thank you Charlie for posting here
Your image is very nice but I would like to sugest you a few things.
Do you work in raw ? OK, let's assume you do. Then you have the original to play with and make the necessary corrections. Not this photo needs great corrections but raw files are always a good and fresh starting point if we have to go over again.
Then you work with LR. You don't work in CS by any chance ?

I think the photo looks a bit twisted/tilted to the left. I am not 100% sure but it looks so.

To begin with I think you should clone the cars and ... perhaps the persons. Or not. I am not sure... but... yes you should clone them. The house introduces the scale to the image. You don't need those dissonant "points" there.
In front of the house, on the beach there is ... garbage ?! Huuumm don't think so, but it is something white looking like, boxes ?? Clean that out, will you ?

The slope on the left side of the picture is important or, would be important to the composition but you haven't got it completely. You should have moved a bit more to the right to get more of the coast and more of the slope/hill.

I think you have too much of graduated filter or you should do it more gently. In my monitor that is

The line of the foam of the water - if it is not foam in this case and I suspect it is not, tell me the right word for it if you please - lead us to the far horizon giving depth to the image.
    Have I been rude/rough ?

    Re: Sunrise over lake somerset.

Thank you very much for the reply Antonio!

I agree that the horizon perhaps isn't level and actually noticed this just after posting. The white infront of the house on the beach are actually rocks - I had cloned out quite a few people on the beach but stopped short of the cars and remaining people at the edge. I will have a go at this, although my cloning skills are somewhat limited at the moment. Are there any good tutorials that you would recommend? I use LR3 but don't have CS, and find that I cam comfortable cloning basic objects with a relatively uniform background (people on a beach for example!) but struggle with more complex items.

Unfortunately, there was limited room to move - right was off the cliff and on to the beach! And no you haven't been rude or rough! I need this sort of critique if I'm going to improve.

    Thanks again,

    Charlie.

    Charlie,
I am glad you were not offended somehow

And the "foam" ? What is the correct name for it ? No, don't say it

I do know already ! Beach foam. Got it Thank Google !

    Hi Chris,

Just a suggestion - you might try cropping it off just below the bottom bale.

    Re: Spring Hay

    Hi Chris,

The big issue I normally have with hay shots is the bales just look messy in the paddock.

Here are two I shot. The first I was not happy with because of the reason mentioned. Going back a week later the hay was still in the paddock and by moving no more then 20 feet to my right I feel it was a much more composed shot with clear lines. The same hay bales in each shot.

    Re: Spring Hay

I think your cropping works with your image because you are much closer to the bales. I was at least 50 yards from the nearest one and because of an electified fence, I couldn't get the angle any lower to raise their stature as Wendy did in one of the Monthly comps...
What do you think of this as a B&W image?

    Clarification...

You like the B&W but prefer the new crop?

Sorry for my short answer CHris but I was trying to say I liked the image with both the B&W converson and with the panorama crop.

    The Emerald Coast of Florida

And, if it wasn't enough that I am lounging about in my shorts...I have to flaunt all this warmth...the sand you will see in these pics really is as white as snow...so, those of you in the cold-cold north can pretend you are looking at a frigid seascape...pretend being the optimum word.

    Hello Peter
It is a nice picture but perhaps you could improve it if the sky was a bit blue or perhaps the sky was overcast and that is not possible...
    Thank you for posting

Scaldingly bright...even with progressive UV lenses, I had to shield my eyes to make these shots...but the water was too pretty not to shoot.
