    Found this little guy scooting across some pond weed. I think it is called a Water Strider. I was up on a dock and couldn't get any closer than about 6 feet. he was about the size of an old American Half-Dollar.

    Mark, have a look at Nuctenea umbratica female. I think it is sometimes also commonly known as Walnut Orb Weaver, or something like that.

    And as it is a nice photo of a spider, I would leave it in this Spider Thread; even if it is getting a bit long now.

    Hey Bill, apologies for the late response, I just noticed your question.

    I had no idea about the hair flinging behavior of these guys. Good to know.

    It's not my tarantula so to speak. They run wild around here in the Mojave Desert.

    They have always been fairly friendly little critters unless you mess with them.

    Hi, not perfect focus but it was the middle of the night in 40 degrees in the Amazon with my old Fuji. There were two types we saw - pink toes and one with blue toes

    Posted in the Digital Equipment section as well - a common jumping spider shot with a 55-300mm Nikkor at 300mm. Not a macro per se, but a good close up none-the-less.

    The sad thing is - I own the Life in the Undergrowth DVD set, and I've watched it at least a dozen times. I should have remembered the UV portion about crab spiders. Guess I'll just have to watch it again...

    Hello, I've just joined and wasn't expecting to be posting for a few days, but then I chanced upon this wonderful thread. I've really been enjoying all the images and info here

    I'm not very good yet but wanted to share this elegant spider that I watched web-making as the sun was rising this morning. I'm guessing at either Tetragnatha extensa or montana. It's very common in my garden.

    I love spiders (along with all other invertebrates) and always have. Nice to be able to admit that here and not get odd looks
