Pat. Difficult to identify your spider from that one view but I would start with Araneus diadematus, often known as the Garden Spider. Also sometimes called the Garden Cross spider because there is a white cross mark on the upperside of the abdomen.

They do vary a bit in overall colouration.

But, I'm assuming that the web was vertical. The spirals are quite close together.

These two appeared next to my head when I opened the garage door. It looks like a female with an egg sac and a male spider that stayed in her vicinity.

The male (I assume it was a male) was a lot smaller.

    Peter,

It looks like there are legs inside the silk that the female is wrapping up. I would actually guess that she caught another spider in her web. However, if the male is hanging around, there will likely be an egg sack at some point.

Nice captures. I like the shot of the male very much.

    Re: Post your Spiders

Yes, as Bill remarked, the first spider has caught another species which looks like Enoplognatha ovata. An interesting shot.

Not sure about the actual live spider though. If the area is a bit on the dark side and dampish, my first thoughts would be to consider Meta merianae.

I once had one living in a corner of my greenhouse. It would hide under the staging during the day then appear during the evenings.

Yes, funny how I didn't see that. To focused on the idea of an egg sac apparently. Nut there are definitely legs in there.
Now I wonder what the smaller spider was doing there...getting to the meal...in for a potential fight or mating?

Garden Spiders we call them in the UK (Araneus diadematus). The white cross on it's abdomen is quite distinctive in that specimen.

    Linyphilia triangularis male

I caught this spider wandering through the open foliage; probably looking for females.

    and the undersides.

Just managed a couple of quick shots before he disappeared under a leaf.

This species can be identified by the dark 'tuning fork' mark on it's carapace.

A Harvestman - Mitopus morio. Not a true spider but a loosely connected family.

    Post your Spiders

Sometimes they carry red mites which use them as part of their behaviour for dispersal.

    Post your Spiders

I often see them on the leg joints but this is the first time I have seen any in this position.

This Araneus diadematus male, on the right, cautiously approached the larger female several times but she wasn't interested so he made a hasty exit.

Lord knows where the spiders were but the morning frost certainly accentuated their webs! Shot through the kitchen window while we were having breakfast.

    Re: Post your Spiders

Hey Gmontjr, I snapped a picture of this exact spider from my house yesterday. I googled images of spiders of New Jersey and yours came up. What kind of spider is this? Could you email me at Jsperber635@gmail.com or Jason.sperber@rbc.com?

    Thank you very much!

    One of the Pardosa species.

    Post your Spiders

Just managed this one quick shot as it ran towards denser cover.

The Pardosa family is very common in the UK and most of those small dark spiders which run around in grassland etc will be a species of this group. But virtually impossible to fully identify without microscopic examination.

Spiders can be dangerous, better to stay away from them...

This spider was flying high over my head making his web against the sky.
