    I Lost!

So I entered this photo into our local newspapers 'summer photos' competition. Unfortunately I didn't win.

I love it anyway! Feedback is appreciated.

If it's any consolation Ricco, I never win any real-world competitions either ... but I think I probably sell more than those who do. Those who can, do. The rest judge competitions!

I recently entered the local juried exhibition at the Art Center. The judge chose the worst one of the bunch!

    I quite like this one.

The last one I entered (with 4 landscapes) was won by a photo of a begger with her hand out -- it was a nice enough shot, but I don't know how one could fairly judge a landscape -v- a street shot. What did get my goat though was the 2nd place one was a bad shot of a tree - through a fence - in the rain: (a) I wouldn't even have shot it, and (b) if I had, I wouldn't even have kept it.

A little older and wiser now, I understand the "dynamics" a lot better ...

    * organisers charge an entry fee

    * organisers get prizes (soft and hard dollar) donated

    * organisers also very "close" to framers ... and guess what - it's a requirement that all entries be framed.

Not sure how many entries there were, but it was in the hundreds.

Ah - it's still good fun. I never expected to win.

I figure all the comps I enter are there to let me experiment and learn more.

Who knows, one day I might win something.

    Re: I Lost!

It's a fun action shot, Ricco, but for me the background is distracting and doesn't really add anything to the overall scene; and the top left corner is too over exposed.

So I would consider a crop much closer to the main subject, switching to a 5 x 4 ratio. Just remove the worst of the top left corner and finishing wherever looks correct.

Possibly a touch of selective sharpening may also help.
