Normally (say in a portrait) this would be the background, which you want to leave muted. The good thing about CS4 is when you add an adjustment layer it automatically adds the mask, and you can always go back and edit things before you finally flatten.
    Yes, that's it !
Smart Object are a pretty good idea because the Filters are re-editable what is great if we have done something overboard.

Alis, here is my quick version before I go and cook dinner.
    Hope you like it.
It is allowed to transform an image in a SCP if in the sequence of a discussion ...

Huumm Now that I see I think it is not perfect. It is nothing but a first and humble approach.
    Rob: Your comment please.

The close cropping improves it quite a bit. The adjustments you made are very good. It still looks a little too blue to me and needs warmimg slightly, but as you are the one doing the cooking...

Yes Rob. Still a bit blue isn't it ?
I would like to mention that the Layer Brightness/Adjustments is completely neutral because it has no adjustents. I have tried it but I placed all to the zeros.

It would be badly placed if it was posted from the beginning and not - as this one is - as the result of a discussion of another image which was not a square one at the beginning.

    OK ?

I added point 4. to the rules.

Oh Ashwin... How sorry I am for having forgotten to thank you for your color correction.

    Thank you Ashwin.

You have done a great job which in fact, I wouldn't know how to.

Let's wait and see Alis' reaction.

Thanks, Antonio, Rob, and Ashwin. Looks good.

About the cropping, I should have cropped it myself.

One more question: The "brightened" picture looks good on monitor, as it is backlit, how about when it is printed, does it look as good?

With me everything goes fine when printing. The images pop and look as good as in my monitor.

Mac monitors must have a very low dynamic range so it matches the paper

Antonio, I've just noticed that someone has COMPLETELY RUINED all of your lovely photos by plastering horrible copyright notices all over them

Alis, I have worked a bit on your last image but I couldn't overcome the color cast on the bear.
So I am not posting it.

Alis, crop your picture don't leave it the way it is. It benefits a lot. I did it with 3/5 and it looked just fine.

    Hello Colin
Horrible copyright. OK. I do know that this copyright watermark thing is not tender, soft, sweet.
It is not supposed to be. It is supposed to protect your images or, in other words, to give a lot of work to people who steels your images if they want to use them.
I am amazed how easy it is to copy images in the net. Right click, Copy Image, New in CS4, paste and there we are: a copy of the photo right from origin.
Yes, I do know that the quality is rather poor but good enough to give them (the images) some kind of use.

No one has ever stolen your images from the web ?
    Lucky you.

I saw some of my images used by someone I know. I told him and he said "Oh what the heck..."
For "political"/social procedures I shut up but am not happy.
Now, if he really wants to use any of my images he will have to eat the watermark with.

Convince me to do other way Colin.

One of these days I saw a software which was able to trace our pictures on the Web.

    Hi Antonio,

Watermarking is something I've thought long and hard about - very very very few people will want to copy your (or my) images - watermarking is (in general) relatively easy to remove (so no major benefit), but unfortunately completely ruins the image for everyone (major disadvantage). So no advantage but major disadvantages drew me to the conclusion that it just wasn't worth it.

If someone want to lift one of my images and print it on a postcard that brings a little joy to their day then they're most welcome to it - it's not taking any money out of my pocket. And yes, I have had my images lifted ...

PS: Pixel Pete told me of how one of his images was lifted - and put on a sex site, complete with his watermark (his name) - so I guess that's another potential problem.

May be you are right Colin... and I will have to think it over.
Thank you for your valuable opinion.
One thing is for sure: the watermark ruins the images.

I guess the safest way of all is to simply never display your images

    I absolutely agree.
But hey, I am not going to do that.
